How to Set Up Custom iOS Icon Apps & Widgets: A Step-by-Step Guide
So you've just purchased one of our lovely icon packs (or found a different pack elsewhere!) and you have no clue how to install them. Here's a simple to follow guide to walk you through every step of setting these icons up on your iOS devices! Whether you are trying to set up on an iPhone or an iPad this is the tutorial for you.
This guide is written for iOS 17.4 but should work for most iOS versions. There may be slight differences, but should you need any help, please feel free to join our Discord server to ask for help or reach out via our contact form!
Setting up Icons
Part 1: Choose and Download Your Custom Icons
Before you begin, you'll need to prepare the custom icons you want to use for your iOS apps. You can use any image.
- If you have purchased an icon pack from us, you will receive an email confirming your order in which you can find the Dropbox link to the right of the screen.
- Tap "Dropbox Link" button:
- Open the link in the browser of your choice:
- There should be four files: "Icons", "Long Icons", "Tutorial and Handy Code" and "Wallpapers"
- Tap the three dots to the right of the files and press "Download":
- Once the icons have been downloaded, add them to your files by tapping "More", then scroll down and select "Save to Files":
Part 2: Saving the Icons to your Gallery
- Open the "Files" app on your IOS device:
- Tap on the icon pack (which should appear as a .zip folder):
- This will create a new folder - tap on the new folder:
- Tap on the folder labelled "Icons" - this will open the folder:
- Select the icon you wish to use and tap the share icon in the top left corner:
- Scroll down and tap "Save Image":
- Repeat steps 4 - 6 with all the icons you wish to use.
Part 3: Create Shortcut for Custom App
- Open the Shortcuts app on your iOS device:
- Tap the "+" icon in the top right corner to create a new shortcut:
- Select "Open App" from the list of actions:
- Tap "App" and select the app you want to create a custom icon for. We used the app Books as an example:
- Tap the downwards facing arrow to access additional options:
- Tap "Add to Home Screen":
- Tap on the dot beneath the photo icon:

Tap "Choose Photo" and select the custom icon image from your photo library:
- Rename the shortcut by tapping on "New Shortcut" text:
- Tap "Add" in the top right corner of the screen:
- Repeat steps 1-10 for each app you wish to customize.
Part 4: Test Your Custom Icons
Once you've set up your custom iOS app icons, test each one to ensure they open the corresponding apps correctly and voila! Your new home screen is set up!
Setting up Widgets
Part 1: Choose and Download your custom Widgets
Similar to the icon setup, you need to download any images you'd like to set up as widgets. Small/large widgets can be set up with any of our regular icons, while medium widgets require the use of our long icons.
If you have skipped ahead to this part of the guide, these files can be found by following Part 1 of the "Setting up Icons".
Part 2: Setting up Widgets in Widgetsmith
- We will use the app called Widgetsmith. This app should already be on your phone, but if you don't have it installed for whatever reason, it can be downloaded for free from the App Store.
- Open Widgetsmith on your iOS device:
- Tap on "Add Medium Widget". Small and large widgets can be added as well, those are square sized ones!:
- Select "Photo" from the menu bar:
- Tap on "Choose from Photos":
- Select the long icon you wish to add to your home screen:
- Rename the widget by tapping on "Medium #1" text:
- Tap on "Save" in the top right corner:
Part 3: Add the Widget to your Home Screen
- Tap and hold your finger on the home screen.
- Tap the "+" icon on the top left of your screen:
- Scroll down in your apps until you find Widgetsmith:
- Tap on Widgetsmith.
- Swipe left and tap "Medium Widget":
- Tap on "Add Widget" - this should take you back to your home screen:
- Press down on the medium widget on your home screen:
- Tap "Edit Widget" in the menu bar:
- Select the widget from the option menu:
- Tap below the white block:
- Repeat the steps in Parts 2 and 3 with all the widgets you wish to set up on your home screen! Once done, please feel free to share your creations with us on social media @cremechii
